A few thoughts on Dance as an art form and its relationship to Breath.
As consciousness moves through Space, or more correctly as objects move through Space so Consciousness moves through them, causing emotions to arise. This is why it is said ‘Time heals all things’. It does this through the helical spiral of the chromosomes held in each cell. Bouncing from the plane of the atomic and molecular level of the body to arise as emotion into the plane of awareness.
It is why love is so fleeting. Or should that be infatuation? We desire something ardently and when it has been gained our desire moves on to another object or objective.
Dance is the Art form which best demonstrates this movement of Consciousness within the individual.
The best of dancers move on breath, extending movement into the extremity of the breath, which often takes the form of an animal.
No other Art form follows the breath in this way. This is because Dance is a non verbal expression.
This is not to say that other Art forms do not halt the breath when they reach a point of particular poignancy.
However when the voice is involved it detracts from the awareness of the breath. The actor projects emotion – an external expression. The dancer follows the emotion – an inward expression. Each moves the audience into understanding the depth of feeling in a situation, but the dancer holds the audience in their hand, while the actor ushers the audience into understanding.
